Naika Malveaux / DJ Whisperwish
Naika grew up as a military kid living overseas in Germany, came up through the Art Institute of Houston, and by 2004 was DJing his own residencies in the Houston underground scene at nights he built from scratch: HaVoK and aTaXia. HaVoK started in a sushi restaurant on the corner of Richmond and Chimney Rock and became the room the mainstream clubs weren't willing to be, a home for industrial, darkwave, EBM, and 80s alternative when nowhere else in town would program it. That room turned into a brand, and the brand turned into HaVoK Events, the promotion company he still runs today, building a Texas circuit for touring acts who otherwise wouldn't have a room to play.
The DJ catalog runs from Front 242, Skinny Puppy, and Ministry through VNV Nation and Combichrist to Phantogram and K. Flay, hard-hitting dance beats woven into classic goth and industrial. Over the years, DJ Whisperwish has opened for The Crüxshadows, VNV Nation, Combichrist, Ayria, AL1CE, MLWTTKK, The Birthday Massacre, Chant, Attrition, and Superstar DJ Keoki, and has taken the decks across Texas and out to Maryland, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and California, plus international dates in Italy and Germany. Alongside HaVoK Events, he runs Whisperwish Entertainment, a talent arm signing and developing artists working in the same underground he came up in, including recent signing In The Shadows.
Beyond the booth, Naika is a working creative director. He founded TrioCollective Advertising in 2002 and has designed everything from nightclub flyers to national brand identities, and spent four years as Marketing Director for the USAF at Aviano Air Base in Italy. He is the rare promoter who can DJ your night, design your flyer, book your tour stop, and build the marketing plan that fills the room, and he has been doing all four for longer than most of the acts he books have existed.
Whether you've danced at HaVoK, caught a Whisperwish set opening for one of your favorite bands, been booked by HaVoK Events on a Texas run, or you're meeting Naika for the first time, this is a conversation with someone who has spent twenty plus years building rooms, filling them, and holding space for a scene that only survives because people like him do the work.
